The European Commission (EC) announced the public consultation on methylisothiazolinone (MI) in rinse-off cosmetic products proposing a restriction of its use and a ban for the use in leave-on products. According to literature and clinical data, sensitization to MI is becoming an increasing problem all over Europe, particularly with young children from moist toilet tissues and cosmetics.
MI is currently authorized as a preservative in cosmetic products up to a concentration of maximum 0.01% (100 ppm). The European Commission is now proposing to:
- Restrict the use of MI to 0.0015% (15 ppm) in rinse-off products, with the obligation of a ''contains methylisothiazolinone'' labeling.
- Ban MI use as a preservative in hair leave-on cosmetic products.
This investigation by the EC and subsequent public consultations shows the importance of ingredient safety and the consequences it can have on people's health.
